Foot Science International

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

It’s been a pleasure working with Foot Science International’s new branding, created by DNA (based in Wellington) over the past few months. I must admit, I do miss the little animated feet gif on their email footers (and the resulting giggle it induced) but the new look is far more polished and it’s great to work with NZ made font Karbon, by Wellington based typographer Kris Sowersby. While DNA have developed the brand structure and top level strategies there’s still plenty of room for creative scope at our end, working with what they have already designed and resolving how best to apply that to new collateral.

I can also personally attest to the benefits of Formthotics™. I started running for the first time for years EVER a few months ago, and experienced alternating hip and knee pain. Not a great start to a new hobby, but after investing in a good quality pair of running shoes custom fitted with a pair of Sport Formthotics™ I’m now relatively comfortable (at least as comfortable as one can be whilst running – no pain, no gain), and now proudly wield my pedometer and regularly clock around the 4.9km mark in 26mins! Puffed Chuffed!

Ali’s Cupcake Bouquets

Monday, December 6th, 2010

There’s something really nice about designing a company’s branding from the logo up, watching its identity grow as the elements get applied to a variety of different media, which is precisely the case with Ali’s Cupcake Bouquets.

Ali’s is rapidly becoming somewhat of a institution in Christchurch, and we’re proud as punch to be involved. With an edible colour palette of chocolately browns and mouth watering caramels, Ali’s breaks away from the cliché pink colour scheme normally associated with cupcakes, and also reflects Ali’s presonality to a tee.

If you’re over at the Palms shopping mall during the lead up to Christmas stop by and say hi to Ali and the girls, you’ll find them in front of kmart. You can also become a fan of Ali’s on facebook or check out alis.co.nz. We’re really looking forward to helping Ali grow her brand further in the new year!

We had to giggle when we saw these creations of Ali’s, especially the army men cupcakes, as there used to be a number of these little guys that floated around the old New Regent Street BOD office, which seemed to have a habit of finding their way into all the pot plants!

An inspiring afternoon at TEDxChCh

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

The inaugral TEDxChCh on October 22 was a resounding success and a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet some of the movers and shakers in Christchurch and hear some amazing ideas and inspiring stories. And we finally got to see all our design work come together – not to put too fine a point on it, it looked great!

Inside the programme: the speaker schedule

Speaker posters line the foyer of Christchurch Art Gallery

Amongst the top class line up of speakers were Grant Ryan, inventor of the Yike Bike (pictured in mid-presentation below), New Zealand International rowing representative Rob Hamill, Sebastian Sylwan, Chief Technical Officer at Weta Digital, and James Caygill, former political adviser to Prime Minister Helen Clark. Check out the TEDxChCh speakers page for the full list – there were some awesome talks and they’ve all been published online so you can enjoy them too!

The live talks were interspersed with video presentations from the original TED, including this fantastic story delivered by Dave Eggers, recipient of the 2008 TED Prize, about the founding of 826 Valencia, a writing and tutoring lab for young people in Mission Bay, San Francisco, that resides behind the city’s only independent pirate supply store (for eye patches, parrot seed and all your piratical needs).

Back here in Christchurch though, Professor Paul Shaw’s entertaining talk on the mystery of the shrinking alligator penises was a highlight.

We’re looking forward to being a part of TEDxChCh 2011 – well done Kaila on a fabulous event!

Arts Participation Guide #4 hits the streets!

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Board of Design is proud to introduce the Fourth Edition of the Arts Participation Guide, which hit the streets in Christchurch this week! We designed this for the CCAC (Christchurch Community Arts Council), whose aim is to encourage and promote the practice, appreciation and enjoyment of all forms of artistic activity in Christchurch. The guide is a compilation of individual listings from the website and encompasses a range of artistic genres from craft and visual arts, through to organisations and venues.

With a substantial print run of 17,000 we wanted to make the guide visually interesting with bright, vibrant colours and circular images, giving the guide a fresh and contemporary feel, to help increase the CCAC’s public visibility in Christchurch.

If you missed on getting into the guide this time around, head on over to artschristchurch.org.nz to register online (it’s free!). Alternatively you can call the CCAC manager on 03 379 4287 and don’t forget to become a fan on their Facebook page too for regular updates!

Canterbury Cheesemongers’ new signage

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

We’ve been working with Sarah and Martin from the Canterbury Cheesemongers for several years now, and the latest edition to their branding is this stylish signage for their shop front. They needed something eye-catching and instantly recognisable as they are situated on a busy one way street, to entice new customers to stop and check them out, which of course is an excellent idea as their cheeses are divine!

Christchurch City Council Desktop Calendar

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

It’s been a while in the making, but finally we have in our hands, hot of the press, a copy of the Christchurch City Council Desktop Calendar! This job has spanned across both Katie’s and Mel’s Board of Design careers, with two editions going to print.

Each calendar page features a panoramic image contrasted with detail shots and intricate graphics, with colours to reflect the relevant season. As a whole, the calendar comes together to form a portrait of the Garden City, from its heritage buildings and landmarks to the Port Hills and Banks Peninsula, and it also looks the part on the Board of Design bookshelf.

Whole Wardrobes brochure

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

We’ve been working with Whole Wardrobes up in Nelson for a fair few years now, and it was a refreshing change to work with their new look logo. They were after a sleek DLE brochure to showcase their range, complete with hand drawn diagrams to compliment the images and illustrate the various product specifications. The cover photograph is finished with a UV overgloss, so it stands out beautifully against the matt black background and has a bit of scuff resistance to keep it looking nice. We were very happy with the result, as were the lovely folk at Whole Wardrobes.

Fabulous flowers

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

To coincide with the Festival of Flowers on at the moment in Christchurch, the Antique Print Gallery is holding an exhibition of Sarah Featon’s flower prints, which will be on display from March 7th – 18th in the Gallery, at 34 New Regent Street.

Featon was an accomplished New Zealand botanical artist, and made publishing history in 1889 with The Art Album of New Zealand Flora, which was the first full-colour art book to be published in New Zealand.

It’s a pleasure to be surrounded by such gorgeous works of art – the Board of Design office is situated above the Print Gallery – and we’re looking forward seeing the botanical works up on display.

Fun with worms

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

This was one of my favourite Council jobs for 2008, where we were able to create this little worm character for Learning Through Action, to encourage primary school children to look after their tiger worms and mini composts..

Cover of the take-home flyer, complete with our interpretation of a decorated worm farm (you can have a lot of fun when kids are your target audience).

A2 posters – items on and off the menu for worms, for display in classrooms.

Business cards for Jo Osborne

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Client: Jo Osborne, infant massage instructor

Brief: In addition to the physical health benefits of infant massage, it also promotes bonding between parent and child, relaxation, and parental self-esteem. Jo’s card needed to look professional and confident, but also evoke a sense of calm and serenity – qualities to appeal to any new parent!

We chose an image that clearly illustrates a strong bond between a mother and baby. By using warm soft greys and an elegant handwritten script for Jo’s name, we created a warm, personal effect and paired it with a clean white background and a simple, modern sans serif font to communicate Jo’s professional nature.
