An inspiring afternoon at TEDxChCh

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

The inaugral TEDxChCh on October 22 was a resounding success and a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet some of the movers and shakers in Christchurch and hear some amazing ideas and inspiring stories. And we finally got to see all our design work come together – not to put too fine a point on it, it looked great!

Inside the programme: the speaker schedule

Speaker posters line the foyer of Christchurch Art Gallery

Amongst the top class line up of speakers were Grant Ryan, inventor of the Yike Bike (pictured in mid-presentation below), New Zealand International rowing representative Rob Hamill, Sebastian Sylwan, Chief Technical Officer at Weta Digital, and James Caygill, former political adviser to Prime Minister Helen Clark. Check out the TEDxChCh speakers page for the full list – there were some awesome talks and they’ve all been published online so you can enjoy them too!

The live talks were interspersed with video presentations from the original TED, including this fantastic story delivered by Dave Eggers, recipient of the 2008 TED Prize, about the founding of 826 Valencia, a writing and tutoring lab for young people in Mission Bay, San Francisco, that resides behind the city’s only independent pirate supply store (for eye patches, parrot seed and all your piratical needs).

Back here in Christchurch though, Professor Paul Shaw’s entertaining talk on the mystery of the shrinking alligator penises was a highlight.

We’re looking forward to being a part of TEDxChCh 2011 – well done Kaila on a fabulous event!

Pecha Kucha Night Christchurch 09, Wed 27th

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

After a slight delay due to the earthquake in Christchurch, Pecha Kucha Night is back, and this time around we’re looking forward to hearing our friend “Mr Bacon” talk about Technology and Design.

There’s a great paste-up down High Street of the latest series of posters for the event, with a selection of previous talk titles; On “Being a dick”, “Young people these days” and “Reiki for pet hamsters” to name a few that made us giggle on the way down to the coffee shop.

Speaking of quakes reminds me of one of my favourite PK talks at the Repertory Theatre (which has unfortunately lost most of its façade since) by Kerry Swanson, entitled “Big images, minute life” where the crowd donned 3D glasses and were “treated” to six minutes and forty seconds of 3 dimensional microscopic photos of bugs! Things you’d never thought you’d see happen in the Repertory Theatre… more pics from PK Night 06 are over on flickr.

Frocks on Bikes!

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

It’s that time of year again, Frocktober. Time to ditch the car, adorn a frock and hit the streets on your bicycle. Lucy and I are off to Frocks on Bikes this Saturday at Hagley Community College, where I’ll be, quite literally, “peddling my wares”, selling some of my new Black Swan Designs bicycle products. Hopefully the sun will be out, with a pleasant norwest breeze, and the grass will have been freshly mowed… mmm… nothing quite says springtime like the smell of freshly cut grass! If you’re in the area pop along!

Counting down to the inaugural TEDxChCh…

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

The countdown is well and truly underway to Christchurch’s inaugural TEDx event now with less than three weeks to go, for which we’re proud to be the design sponsor. For more info on the event, registration details and the speaker line-up head over to tedxchch.com. And of course keep an eye out for our posters about town, featuring Mel’s photographic images of SOL Square by night!

Proud to sponsor TEDxChch

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Board of Design is pleased as punch to be involved in the inaugural TEDxChch. If you’re not familiar with TED, prepare to have your mind blown. It started in California in 1984 as a four day conference bringing together thinkers and doers from the fields of technology, entertainment and design, and has grown to become an incredible repository of free knowledge and inspiration from the world’s most inspired thinkers. Every TED Talk is recorded and archived on TED.com – a website on which you can easily sink a few hours at a time absorbing 18 minute capsules of inspiration and ideas.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created an initiative called TEDx, a programme of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience, and luckily for us Christchurch dwellers, Kaila and Jess from The Missing Link are making it happen here with the very first TEDxChch.

The idea of all TED and TEDx events is for you to be inspired as much by your fellow audience as you are by the speakers. TEDxChCh attendees are intellectually curious, excited by possibility, creative, and passionate about spreading great ideas – sound like you? Find out more on the TEDxChch website.

As a taste of the TED experience, here’s my all time favourite TED Talk – Elizabeth Gilbert on nurturing creativity.

A Craft Affair is coming to town!

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

We’re pretty proud of the results of our latest branding project. A Craft Affair is the biggest handmade shopping event on the Christchurch calendar, with more than 40 stalls featuring the best and brightest of the local craft scene, so the posters and marketing needed to reflect passion and quality, with a handmade flavour. And of course it’s nice to have a subtle hint of Kiwiana in there too.

Naturally Mel will be there with her Black Swan Designs hat on, selling some of her fabulous jewellery (pictured below) and I’ll be there promoting Felt. It’ll be a great day out – hope you can make it along!

Board of Design turns seven!!

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Saturday was a very special day for Board of Design, our seventh birthday!! We treated ourselves to cupcakes (which were enjoyed in the company of former Board Member Katie and Punky the rabbit) and a new website! Thanks to everyone for their support over the years, here’s to another exciting seven years in business!

NZ Arts Festival in the Capital

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Lucy and I spent the weekend up in Wellington for the NZ Arts Festival, in particular Neil Gaiman’s Town Hall Talk, as part of the Writers Week festivities. NZ Post, one of the festival sponsors, installed “inspiring words” in several locations around the city, some as giant installations (as pictured below on the side of the lovely Swonderful shop) and others at typical fridge magnet size, where the public could unleash their creativity and cross their fingers that the infamous Wellington winds didn’t whip them from their magnetic perch!

Word sets were also given away as part of the marketing, for creative types (such as ourselves) to try their hand at poetry, which is precisely what we did over a spot of breakfast…

And of course, my currently-most-coveted-possesion, “The Day I Swapped My Dad For Two Goldfish” inscribed by Neil with “best fishes”! Neil was signing books for a total of three hours (!!!) after his talk, not wanting to disappoint a single fan… Legend.

The APG shop window is all a flutter

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

After winning the Supreme Award last year for our Antique Print Gallery window display, as part of the Christchurch Ellersie Flower Show, we were quite excited about putting together another display. This year we decided to fill the window with little butterflies, all hand cut from off cuts of Antique prints, which we complimented with prints and greeting cards from the Buller’s New Zeland birds series.

Alas, we didn’t win the competition again this year again (perhaps it would have been a bit greedy to win two years running anyway), but were bestowed with the Silver award for Best Retailer! We were nevertheless chuffed, and have had many a passerby stop in to comment on our handiwork.

Felt like Christmas

Friday, December 4th, 2009

The Night Market was a great success, with people flocking in their hundreds to admire the wares of talented local crafters at Our City O-Tautahi! There was a wide range of wares on offer; jewellery, bags, ceramics, childrens clothing, toys (to mention but a few) and scrumptious chocolatey treats from the lovely people at She Chocolat. We’re sure there will be many happy recipients of beautifully hand crafted goodies this Christmas!
