"Slip" Crochet Installation

Imagine crossing Cathedral Square in the depths of winter, when the urban landscape is at its bleakest. In the midst of the concrete and skeletal trees, a small sign of life catches your eye. Just a couple of leaves – a small, innocuous vine clinging to the hard surface of a lamppost. As part of the Winter Garden for the 2009 Christchurch Arts Festival, we co-ordinated a crochet installation in the Square. Over 50 local knitters and crocheters participated in creating French knitted vines, which "grew" crocheted flowers for the duration of the Festival. Attached to the vines with brooch pins, the flowers could be "picked" and pinned to a coat or scarf.
